What kind of services do you provide?

We provide veterinary care for dogs, cats, and horses. This care includes the typical needs of most pets with respect to vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention, flea control products, etc. We also perform many different types of surgery, ( for cats and dogs, horses are usually referred to an equine surgical facility). What makes us a little bit different from the typical veterinary hospital is that we also incorporate complimentary and alternative medicine into the practice. This is optional, you can ask for this type of care, or you can elect to stay within the boundaries of traditional western medicine. Left up to us, we combine the two to find the most effective solution to the problem.

What is alternative and complimentary medicine?

Complimentary and alternative medicine, (CAM), is the new phrase that has developed recently to encompass medical care that is not part of the traditional western style of medicine practiced routinely in the U.S.A.. CAM can encompass many different "modalities", including acupuncture,  chiropractic, herbal products, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, etc.

Medical care as practiced in most hospitals, relies heavily on medication that is produced by pharmaceutical companies and surgical procedures to treat medical problems. This approach is largely based on the elimination of symptoms. For example, antibiotics will be prescribed for a patient with an infection. However, nothing is usually done to evaluate or treat the reason why the patient got the infection to begin with.  Of course, this is not always the case, but the point is: most western medical therapy is directed at making the patient feel better by treating symptoms or manifestations of a disease process. Often, this approach is adequate and additional therapy is not needed or warranted. Now, along comes CAM, which is an attempt to approach problems from a more "holistic" approach. Symptoms are treated as in western medicine, but the process takes an additional step: search for the cause or the source, create balance within the body, and promote better overall health. This is the "complimentary" aspect of CAM.

In addition to the holistic approach of CAM, we have found many disease conditions that do not have an effective western therapy or medication.  In some cases, even if there is an effective medication, it can produces undesirable side effects. In many of these situations, there are methods of therapy available outside of western medicine that can be of value, this is the "alternative" aspect of CAM. (More about acupuncture)

Do I need an appointment or do you take "walk ins"?

We prefer that all patients are seen by appointment only. We do make exceptions for emergencies. We also encourage "drop offs" for the people that work the same hours we do. This service allows you to drop your pet off before work and then pick them up on the way home. We provide the daycare at no additional charge.

Do you make house calls or farm calls ?

We do make farm calls for the horses, but no house calls for the cats or dogs.
